Educator Connie Hebert urges parents to utilize ‘The Teachable Minute’

Longtime educator Connie Hebert, of West Springfield, has written “The Teachable Minute: The Secret to Raising Smart and Appreciative Kids,” a book designed to help parents maximize teaching moments throughout the day with their children.
Hebert was encouraged to write the book after observing a young boy in a restaurant with his mother. In 45 minutes, the boy talked on topics, like what he was coloring, and what kind of ice cream he was going to get, but, Hebert said, not once did his mother look up from her cell phone to engage with him.
“No matter what race, what age and what gender, all kids are curious and they all need a lot of attention,” Hebert said. “When you tap into the teachable minute, you help them to grow. When you give them that teachable minute, you produce kids that are appreciative of their parents’ time and effort.”
Hebert’s book gives parents examples of 77 such moments and how they can become educational opportunities to help their children think and problem solve.
No matter what race, what age and what gender, all kids are curious.
In addition, she offers suggestions for 77 books that can be used, as well as different tips for moms, dads and grandparents.
“I want to help parents, particular the young ones. The book is
just a springboard to helping them find their own ideas,” said Hebert, a national literacy consultant with a doctorate in educational leadership, and a master’s in reading education.
Hebert has written two other books aimed at helping educators improve
the way they teach reading and writing. For her current book aimed at non-educators, she focuses on what she sums up as “SAT,” meaning “What to show kids, what to ask kids and what to teach kids, anywhere you happen to be with them.”
“The Teachable Minute,” published by Morgan James Publishers/NYC, will be
released Oct. 8. It will be available at major book retailers and online
retailers such as www.amazon.com. For more information, visit
